Could Spider-Man Be In The Avengers After All?

It’s safe to say my anticipation for The Avengers film has reached an all time high. with just three months to go until the movie hits, my mind is full of questions. who are the villains? where is the new trailer? will Hawkeye be more than just a supporting character, and most importantly, will any other Avengers cameo?

Rumours have recently been circulating online regarding Spider-Man potentially having a cameo in The Avengers movie. Normally, it’s easy to ignore these types of rumours, as the Avengers are owned by Marvel, and Sony owns the rights to the web-slinger. What fuels these rumours this time though is that Disney will be involved in the merchandising rights for The Amazing Spider-Man, meaning Disney have some weight in the Marvel character’s film rights. Could it be that Disney made a deal with Sony for Peter Parker to show up in The Avengers, if it meant Disney would aid Sony by undertaking a strong merchandising effort for The Amazing Spider-Man?

It would be great to see Peter Parker show up in The Avengers. Among all Easter eggs, seeing a top character like Spider-Man appear would be a crowning achievement for Marvel Studios. For Sony, I can only imagine that an Avengers cameo for Spidey would perhaps create some momentum for the character, considering his own film would still be some three months away. Plus, Spider-Man’s return to cinema comes at a time when a certain Dark Knight returns for a second sequel. Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone aside, it’s safe to say The Dark Knight Rises will easily out perform Spidey at the box office. Sony will need all the help they can get if they want to compete with the likes of The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises.

Honestly though, I can’t see Spider-Man appearing in The Avengers. Neither studio would gain enough from it. Marvel are riding off the success of Iron Man, Thor and Captain America, while Sony are likely to bring in strong enough numbers based on the Spidey name alone. It would certainly be good if it did happen, as it would signal the end of movie studios clinging to individual characters, and if Marvel Studios could eventually win back Spider-Man, who says they couldn’t one day reclaim the X-Men? Regardless, Sony have always stood strong with the Spidey franchise (Spider-Man 3 story aside) so I don’t think they would be in any rush to sell one of the world’s most popular superheroes too soon.

ET Bracket Series Results June 18th and 19th – Baytown, TX

Saturday 1/4 Mile Super Pro
Winner – Derrick Patton
Runner-Up – Jason Lummus
Semis – Eddie League, Jr.
Total Entries – 47

Highland’s Derrick Patton recorded his second Super Pro victory Saturday, placing him at the top of the points. Derrick decimated the 47 car field by edging out some of the best racers in the area. most of his victories were earned at the starting line, having rather large reaction time advantages over Earl Thrift in the second round and Jason Lummus in the final. Stephen Hughes laid down a.004 to Derrick’s.014 in the 4thround, but Derrick’s Maverick saved the day, running right on his 10.34 dial with a 7. Runner-up Jason Lummus made us all cringe in the semifinals when it was clear to us on the starting line that Eddie League’s dragster was going to be late to the finish line. despite everyone yelling and motioning for Jason to slow down, he showed us all how it is done by running 10.050 on his 10.05 dial. Lummus also ran dead on his dial with an 8 in the previous round against a nearly one full second off Robert Gregory. there are a lot of jealous racers out there who wish they could trust their car like Jason did Saturday night. Derrick Patton and Jason Lummus were the big winners in Super Pro, taking home $1200 and $600 and they each get a trophy for the mantle from Royal Purple Raceway. Saturday night’s other money winners were Derrick’s father, Daryl Patton, Arthur Edison, Ray Martinez, Stephen Hughes, Eddie League Jr., Glen Stepan, Michael Kennedy, Terrance Harrison and Robert Gregory.

Saturday 1/4 Mile Footbrake
Winner – Gordon Smith
Runner-Up – Bryan Day
Semis – Jay Robinson, Bill Arning
Total Entries – 53

Round one of the footbrake class started off with 53 drivers seeking the $800 top prize and the mantle-crowding Royal Purple Raceway trophy. Gordon Smith from Crosby took the honors Saturday, driving his ’74 Vega all the way to the Winner’s Circle. Gordon was solid on the tree all day, besting all of his opponents at the starting line except for Runner-Up Bryan Day. Bryan, fresh off of his elimination of points leader Jay Robinson, took a.025 to.061 green light advantage but was forced out by the 125 mph charge coming from Gordon Smith in the other lane. Smith earned the 2ndround bye with his .004 light against Thomas Ray in the first round, but there was a lot of competition for that honor. Chris Talbot, Drew Porcher and Manuel Rios all recorded double zero reaction times in the first round, and Tommy Huffman of Dayton was triple zero, but was unable to close the deal, running 12.699 on his 12.70 dial-in. It didn’t get any easier in the second round of Footbrake, with Donna Lummus, Daniel Martinez and Kendall Eisemann all putting together near perfect runs. Chris Talbot, Drew Porcher and Donna Lummus were able to parlay their great runs into a money winner sticker along with Keenan Eisemann, Robert Penn, Jay Robinson, Brian Gallagher, Blair Nelson, Bill Arning, Reginald Newman and Sheila Day.

Sunday 1/8thMile Super Pro
Winner – Stephen Hughes
Runner-Up – Brenda Kay
Semis – John Winn
Total Entries – 46

Despite the unrelenting heat, 46 drivers made the call for first round of Super Pro on Sunday. after the first few rounds, it appeared we were going to see Scott Boyd and John Winn in the final after recording multiple double zero and dead on packages each, but the smart money was on the Million Dollar man, Stephen Hughes. no stranger to final rounds, including 3 in this series so far, Stephen cut through the field with relative ease. Last time out, Stephen faced biker Ricky Kay in the final, this time it was Ricky’s wife, Brenda on her 120 MPH (1/8thmile) Suzuki GSXR. Covering the 660′ in the mid-5 second range, Brenda was able to end John Winn’s viable quest for his third final round in the semi’s and footbraker Bryan Day’s chase for the gold in the quarters. You’ll get it one day, Bryan. Brenda didn’t cut any slack (.009) on her husband, Ricky, in the 4thround or Saturday’s winner, Derrick Patton or a.004 Glen Stepan. Stephen Hughes’ biggest scare came in the quarterfinals, when he faced Saturday’s Runner-Up, Jason Lummus. China, TX’s Jason Lummus was fresh off of back to back double zero lights when he faced Hughes, but both drivers were off their game a little bit, and it was the 4-second dragster of Stephen Hughes running closest to his dial. the $1200 winner’s check pales in comparison to events that Stephen has won in the past, but getting to stand in the Winner’s Circle on Father’s Day with his wife, Lindsey, and their two young kids is priceless. Other drivers taking home money on this Father’s Day were Arthur Edison, Scott Boyd, Greg Roberts, Leslie Meyer, Dewayne League, Ricky Kay and Bryan 000 Day.

Sunday 1/8thMile Footbrake
Winner – Jay Robinson
Runner-Up – Bubba Dodge
Semis – Sheila Day

Start the countdown. With this latest victory, Jay Robinson has all but sealed his unprecedented 6thtrack championship at Houston Raceway Park. Jay only needs to win 10 more rounds in the next 4 races to guarantee his name to be the one engraved on the cup and his entry into the Division 4 E.T. Finals Race of Champions. With that being said, I would like to congratulate Jay on his performance this year, and the rest of us mere mortals will be battling it out for the remainder of the top 10 spots. this Sunday was no different than any other race for Jay, he used killer lights and excellent top end driving skills to annihilate the competition once again. Jay didn’t have it easy all day, drawing some of the best drivers Houston has to offer. Blair Nelson and Bryan Day both ran dead on their dials against Jay in the first 2 rounds, then he went on to face a redlighting Dennis Clark, mr. Final round Drew Porcher, Jamie Haines and then Bubba Dodge in the final. Danbury’s Bubba Dodge let off the brake just a tad early in the final, turning on the red light, giving Jay Robinson his 4thvictory in the O’Reilly E.T. Drag Racing Series this season. up to that point, Bubba was able to catch red lights from Nathan Gallagher and Steven Talbot to start off his day, then he earned the 3rdround bye with his.008 against Talbot, then John Stelly and Sheila Day left early on Bubba in the fourth and sixth rounds. Coach Tim Ray had the right idea by somehow managing to go green on him in the 5thround, but it was a little too green, giving Dodge a.028 advantage at the tree. Jay and Bubba took home $800 and $400 respectively, and a couple of nice Royal Purple Raceway trophies. Some others who got to take home some cash and a money winner sticker are Robert Penn, Sheila Day, Joey Cram, Jamie Haines, Mike Drew Porcher, Brian Gallagher, Coach Tim Ray and John Stelly.

As Investors Await Facebook IPO, Social-Networking Companies Look to Cash In With Blockbuster IPOs

It appears investors will have to wait until the first quarter of 2012 to get their hands on shares of Facebook–that is unless they are willing to pony up the large amount of cash required to buy shares of Zuckerberg’s $100 billion dollar company on SharesPost.com or SecondMarket.com. but why should investors have to wait another nine months to throw their kids college fund away on the stock of a hot social-networking company trading at a suicidally high price/sales ratio? Thankfully, LinkedIn (Ticker: LNKD) stepped-in to quench the market’s thirst on May 18th when it sold 7.84 million shares for $45 each, a higher price than [even] the company was expecting.earlier [that] week. (Selyukh)

In case you’re unfamiliar with the company, LinkedIn is, according to the company website the world’s largest professional network on the Internet with more than 100 million members in over 200 countries [and generates] revenues. from user subscriptions, advertising sales and hiring solutions.(LinkedIn.com) Basically, it is Facebook for business people and professionals. while its growth has been meteoric, the company is overvalued by virtually every meaningful metric one can conjure-up. It’s price to earnings ratio is a mind-boggling 595, it’s price to book ratio is close to 71, and it’s price to sales ratio is 31. (source: Morningstar) By comparison, Google’s p/e is 13.2, its p/b is 3.5, and its p/s is 5.5. allow me to reiterate: the price to book value of LinkedIn is 71. That means the company is trading for seventy-one times the net asset value of the business (assets minus liabilities). Ok, so its overvalued like a hot.com stock in 2000. That’s not the point. The point is that everyone knew it was overvalued before it began trading and people bought it anyway. On its first day of trading the stock opened at $83 and quickly rose above $90, where it stayed for most for most of the morning [before] hit[ting] a high of $122.70 in late morning trading–the IPO price was $45. (Pepitone)

The price performance of the stock on its first day of trading reflects investors’ appetite for companies with huge potential for future growth. LinkedIn is one of those companies, as are Zynga, Groupon, and, the grandaddy of them all, Facebook. if investors missed LinkedIn’s IPO that’s ok because on June 2 Groupon filed to go public in an offering that could fetch $3 billion. Groupon, which has grown revenue from a mere $94 million in 2008 to over $713 million last year and which has already racked up close to $645 million in revenue this year, gives its 83 million subscribers the opportunity to buy coupons from local restaurants, bars, and other businesses at a substantial discount. For instance, a subscriber might pay $10 dollars at groupon.com for a coupon worth $20 in food at a local eatery. Though the business model is sound, the rate at which the company is expanding is costing money–a lot of money. although Groupon pulled in $713 million in revenue last year, it actually posted a loss of $456.3 million.nearly half of which was acquisition related. (Munarriz) also noteworthy is the fact that the amount that Groupon reports as revenue is the full amount of the prepaid deals.[of which] Groupon kept just 39% last year. (Munarriz) Furthermore, only about 25% of Groupon’s subscribers have ever actually purchased a coupon from the company.

But at the end of the day, no one can deny that the company is growing at an unprecedented rate. It now boasts 57,000 participating merchants; up from 212 two years ago. even more astonishing, the number of people subscribing to Groupon has risen from 152,000 in 2009 to over 83 million currently. (Solin) this kind of growth should attract enough investors to drive Groupon’s stock through the roof in the first few days it is available to the public. Never mind those who say that Groupon is not ‘a good investment’ because it is ‘overvalued.’ Of course it’s overvalued–so was LinkedIn when it went public. The flood of irrationality and exuberance that will likely surround Groupon’s IPO will almost certainly wash away any trace of reason or prudence–at least for a few days.

Traders should take advantage of the opportunity: the idea is to make money, not to debate the long term prospects of a company that sells restaurant coupons. When the stock becomes available to the public, traders should buy it in the morning and watch it climb. After it goes up the first day, the disciplined trader will sell it immediately. The next step is to wait until reality kicks in and people begin to sell the overvalued shares. at this point the savvy trader will purchase long puts (contracts that allow traders to sell 100 share lots of stock at a specified price) on the company’s stock in the options market. this will allow the trader to profit from a decline in Groupon’s shares. in this way, traders can make money on the way up, and, if the timing is right, on the way down. Additionally, if the goal is fast profits, it will be wise to ignore those who say that the average person has no chance of getting into Groupon at the IPO price. this is true (typically, only the wealthy and the well-connected get a piece of the IPO at the actual IPO price) but keep this in mind: the insiders got LinkedIn for $45. It was $83 by the time the average Joe got a crack at it. but it was at $122.70 a few hours later. No one should complain about getting in at $83 and selling at $122–even if someone else got it for $45. The trick is to be disciplined and bail-out after the first-day bonanza.

Although I believe that even the ‘small guy’ has a good chance of making money from the IPOs of hot social-networking companies, the average investor can certainly be forgiven for being skeptical. After all, only a privileged few are likely to get Groupon, Zynga, or Facebook stock at or near the actual IPO price (the rest of us will just have to see what the stocks open at). even if one did manage to get some shares at a price that is not too inflated, the first few days of trading in these issues are likely to be a gut-wrenching roller-coaster ride that will test the discipline and resolve of even the most level-headed trader. However, as a recent article in the Wall Street Journal (Is his Company Worth $1000 Billion? by Shayndi Raice) makes clear, social-networking companies have huge growth prospects. One venture capitalist interviewed by the Journal estimates Facebook’s revenue will be around $20 billion per year by 2015. Investors are excited about these businesses and no matter how many analysts and commentators come out and say social-networking companies are overvalued, one simple fact remains: these stocks are extremely likely to go up (way up) on IPO day, and their prices are likely to stay inflated–at least for a little while.

With so many of these companies going public this year, traders will miss a huge opportunity if they allow their fear of volatility to keep them on the sidelines. let me reiterate that I do believe these companies are overvalued by almost any metric one wishes to use. but that won’t keep investors out of the market when the companies go public, and shouts of be rational for god’s sake won’t keep the stocks from going up. in short: if traders want to make money, they need to be in these trades one way or another. Fortunately for the faint-of-heart (read: the rational and the intelligent), there is a good way to mitigate the risks associated with hot IPOs. first Trust US IPO Index ETF (Ticker: FPX) carries a surprisingly low expense ratio (just.60%) and it even pays a dividend (it yields.86%). to be sure, it offer[s] only limited exposure to the most sought-after tech IPOs and their hoped-for first-day-gains.[but] assets are spread across 25 to 100 diverse companies, providing a cushion from the kind of share-price fallback that LinkedIn experienced after its first-day pop. (Hogan L14) Additionally, buying shares of this ETF puts a small-time investor’s money in a pool of assets that is big enough to carry some weight on IPO day. what does that mean? It means that when these companies do go public, mr. Average Joe is likely to get some shares at the actual IPO price instead of the opening price. Personally, I would not want to own this ETF as part of my long-term portfolio because some years are better for IPOs than others. but with so many hot social-networking companies going public in the next two years, shares of FPX could double by 2013. Investors might miss the 300% and 400% short-term gains, but with FPX, at least they’ll get a piece of them.

The Greatest Dallas Mavericks of All Time

In 2011, the Dallas Mavericks won their first-ever NBA championship. before winning the championship, they had won three divisional titles and two conference titles. this thirty-year old team has had quite a number of household names on their roster. Players such as Steve Nash, Dirk Nowitzki, Brad Davis, Mark Aguirre, Jason Kidd and Rolando Blackman are some of the best to ever play for Dallas. In my opinion, the greatest Dallas Mavericks of all time are Jason Kidd, Mark Aguirre, and Dirk Nowitzki.

No. 3: Jason Kidd (1994 – 1996 & 2008 – Present)
Kidd’s promising career began with him being named Rookie of the Year for 1995. Many will be quick to say that at his prime years weren’t spent in Dallas. however, the role he played in helping Dallas to win their only title to date in 2011 overshadows this critique. he should still be considered one of the greatest Mavericks of all-time. Deep down in the heart of Dallas fans, they knew Jason Kidd’s home was always in Dallas. In 2008, Kidd returned to the Mavericks as a much more experienced player and this helped in guiding Dallas to the title. he was named to the All-Star team in 1996 and 2010 as a member of the Mavs.

No.2: Mark Aguirre (1981 – 1989)
The first round overall pick of the 1981 draft made three All-Star appearances while at Dallas. during his tenure, Mark Aguirre was regarded as the Mavericks main offensive force. His scoring prowess ranks second only to Dirk Nowitzki in franchise history. Aguirre averaged over 24 points per game in eight seasons for the Mavs, and while he never made it to the NBA Finals, he helped to shape what the franchise is today.

No. 1: Dirk Nowitzki (1998 – Present)
This could rank as one of the easiest choices to make of a greatest player ever to play on a basketball team. Dirk Nowitzki has already achieved an NBA Championship, MVP Finals Award, NBA MVP, ten All-Star appearances and eleven All-NBA team selections. he has carried Dallas on his back to ten-straight playoff appearances from 2000 through to 2011. he made it to the finals one other time, 2006, in a losing effort. he returned to the finals in 2011 to beat the Miami Heat to win the franchise’s first ever Championship. the German is loved not only by his Dallas fans, but basketball fans all over the world. on the court he is one of the hardest players to defend with his size and shooting ability. the seven-footer has quickness, range and an eye for the basket. with all of that being said, his most notable attribute might be withstanding pressure and lifting his game whenever his team needs it.

Dirk Nowitzki is still mr. Dependable for the Mavs, and no other player has come close in doing what he has done for his team. Jason Kidd and Mark Aguirre are among many others who could have made the top three, but nobody in the history of the franchise has accomplished what Dirk Nowitzki has, and he isn’t done yet.

Dallas Mavericks Win 2011 NBA Championship

There was a sign held up in the crowd on Sunday night in big blue letters by four different fans, each holding one letter. T-E-A-M it spelled, and a team is what won the 2011 NBA Championship. one team paid close to three max contracts to try to win an NBA Championship; and the other team built their roster with players who wanted to win it all, and who each knew their roles. Dirk Nowitzki was the player who was their leader though. He had his team’s back whenever anyone needed him. 102 degree fever? Not a problem. Torn tendon in his middle finger? Child Please as Chad Ochocinco says. Granted Dirk, who’s one of the most humble players in the NBA would never say anything like that, it’s my job as the blogger to say it for him. He’s a stud, a future Hall Of Famer, and the most underrated player in the NBA.

But as much as Dirk was the Mavs leader, he also got the support from his role players and good friends also. Jason Terry started quietly in the 2011 NBA Playoffs, but turned it up to a different level when they needed him. He drained probably the biggest shot of his career to end game 5, over top of none other than Lebron James, and then ended game 6 with an incredible 27 point performance. Jason Kidd hit big shot after big shot, protected the basketball, and consistently hit the open player as he’s done his whole career. And what about J.J. Barea? He’s generously listed as 6 feet tall, when in reality he’s probably about 5’10 in shoes. but he spent the entire series weaving in and out of the Heat defense, and he was the Mighty Mouse of this team. Tyson Chandler and Shawn Marion were just consistent game in and game out. Offensive rebounding, defensive rebounding, blocking shots, they just dominated the inside for the Mavs. even Deshawn Stevenson and Brian Cardinal played their roles incredibly well. Stevenson hit big shots when they needed them, and Cardinal came in with intensity guarding guys that left the announcers oooh-ing and ahh-ing. This was team basketball at it’s finest.

To be honest, I’m not sure if any team in any situation could have taken down the Dallas Mavericks in these NBA Finals. They were the team of destiny, and were humble the entire time. Dirk Nowitzki has been humble since he came into the league 10 years ago. When Dwayne Wade called out Dirk for not being clutch back in 2006, and saying that was the reason that the Mavs lost; Dirk didn’t respond, he just waited for his shot to prove Wade wrong.

Lebron James

I refuse to blow up this article about the Dallas Mavericks with too much Lebron James talk, but something has to be said. through game 5, Lebron James averaged 2.2 points in the fourth quarter of the 2011 NBA Finals. He’s been called out for his play, but no one seems to know the real answer of what is wrong with Lebron. He refused to take over in the fourth quarter of any game when his team needed him. He passed the ball off like it was a hot potato, and didn’t have the killer instinct of the Michael Jordan’s or Kobe Bryant’s of the game. Only time will tell if he has that killer instinct, he’s a gifted player and one of the most physically gifted athletes that I’ve ever seen play any sport; but none of that will matter if he can’t dominate during the Finals, when all eyes are on him.

In the end though, a world of congratulations goes out to the Dallas Mavericks, Mark Cuban, Dirk Nowitzki, Jason Kidd, and so many more players, coaches, and fans of the Dallas Mavericks. you deserve to be 2011 NBA Champions.

Entrepreneurs Know People Make it Happen

Successful entrepreneurs learn early in their careers that good people make good things happen. When most of us start out in our own businesses, we think that money is the key to making a business successful. To some degree it is — certainly if there is enough money things are easier, but money alone is not the answer.

The validity of this statement can be found in every conversation you will have with rich, successful business people. I’ve had the good fortune to know several and to have met with many more. I don’t think I can recall any conversation I ever had that either began or shortly after getting started didn’t include the following questions.

So Art, what’s new? what are you doing? anything I can get involved in?

They know it’s the people that make things happen and the best way they can increase their wealth is to find people that are working at making things happen and to get involved with them.

Now you may think that such people are rare, hard to find, perhaps the beneficiary of some special talent given at birth. You might be right, but let me say that I believe there are many more out there just waiting for their chance to become the next super stars. We all read about the many who have achieved success and we wish we could be part of their team or better yet, to have known them when they were first starting out. and there are the operative words — when they were first starting out.

All those we would identify as today’s stars were just regular people at some point in their careers. somebody gave them the chance. Maybe it was some seed capital, or the opportunity to prove themselves by taking on a difficult situation. Maybe the person who was to take on the task was late or got lost on the way and the future star was just in the right place at the right time.

My point is when you take over your business — or start it, you will have people working with you and for you. Look at all of them as potential stars that can help you succeed. It’s your job, maybe your most important job, to help everyone you work with to become as much as they can be. That’s right, you should make it your life’s work to identify the people who are under achieving and who want to do more, be more. You need to find out what turns them on and then put them in the right situation with the right tools and train them so they can conquer the biggest mountains. If you don’t, not only will you limit the growth of your business, you will do those who have put their faith and trust in you (shareholders, employees, customers, suppliers) a terrible injustice, and you will miss out on the truly great rewards of being in business for yourself.

I remember the first big contract I signed when I first started in business for myself. Commercial Loan Insurance Corp (CLIC) a division of Mortgage Guarantee Insurance Corp (MGIC) had just started getting hit with some very large claims. One of their clients suggested that I talk with them about their situation — he also called them and told them that I could help.

In just a few days, I was in their offices talking about my background and suggesting that they hire me to look at five properties throughout the western states and give them an action plan to minimize their losses. They asked me if I could do it in thirty days, I said I could, we agreed on the compensation and I flew home with a nice retainer.

After they received my report, they called and invited me back to discuss my recommendations — as I recall there were three options.

Option C, where you suggest that we implement these specific property improvements, get the warehouses leased out, collect the money, pay the bills, etc. this looks like it will produce the best result.

Yes it will. I replied. But you need the people, do you have them?

No. How about if you do it? You collect the rents, pay the bills, and send us a report at the end of the month with a net check. Can you do it?

They gave me my chance and I did it.

When you look at somebody don’t get misled by titles or lack thereof, or the clothes they are wearing, or their narrow range of experiences. Look at what’s behind the mask we all wear and help the person achieve their goals — and they will help you achieve yours.

In Defense of the Westboro Baptist Church

Now that the threat of a demonstration by zealots of the controversial Westboro Baptist Church to create a disturbance at the funeral of Elizabeth Edwards has passed, it’s an opportune time to reassess just what Westboro is up to, what it wants, and why those zealots do what they do.

In a previous life, actually in a previous post dated almost a year ago, I wrote about that The Westboro Baptist Congregation, the WBC, so thrives on outlandish and hateful propaganda that it must be regarded as one of the worst organizations in the nation in terms of vicious radicalism.

Make no mistake, the WBC has countless hate-peers. Nevertheless, it’s a standout performer, in a class by itself, especially when it comes to attacks on homosexuals and Jews.

What makes the WBC even worse is that it cites both Old and new Testament scripture to bolster its points of view and its vile invective. Its website, Godhatesfags.com, cites Calvinistic interpretations of Holy Scripture as Biblical truth.

I retract none of that, although some should be modified.

The WBC is still outlandish, hateful, vicious, and vile. However, even in its most recent outlandish, hateful, vicious, and vile theatened demonstrations against the memory of Mary Elizabeth Anania Edwards, protests that fortunately were never allowed to happen, reasonable people must grant that Westboro has some valid points.

Some additional points, negative points, are that AOL.com, Google.com, and Bing.com have made access to the Westboro Baptist Church home page virtually inaccessible. That concerted effort at internet censorship, assuming my browser isn’t the culprit, stinks almost as much as Westboro’s tactics.

Therefore, in the absence of any other active defense of the WBC and in view of the active suppression of the First Amendment rights of the WBC, I, grudgingly, offer my meager services.

To be blunt, Pastor Fred Phelps and Westboro’s alleged 40,000 adherents may best be described as imbecilic in many of their activities, though not in their beliefs. However, in view of the fact that America regularly elects imbeciles to govern them and millions of Americans worship at the feet of imbecilic celebrities, how can America-and AOL and Google and Bing- presume to selectively censor the WBC?

The WBC’s mindlessness at military funerals is clearly repugnant and indefensible but some of its views are reasonable and very defensible. Its vicious invective falls far beyond the pale of civilized dissent but the fundamental bases of the WBC’s protests have more than some credibility.

I don’t advocate in favor of Westboro’s most reprehensible and despicable activities, those disruptions at the funerals of America’s war dead, soldiers who gave their lives for their country who are then rewarded by Westboro mobs chanting and picketing within earshot of mourners, but I do endorse the basic principles of the Westboro Baptist Church, and they do have sincere, if rigid, principles.

To paraphrase Voltaire, I may not agree with what they do but I will defend to the death their reasons for doing it. Ok, not to the death but strongly.

Eighty one year old Pastor Fred Waldron Phelps Sr., father of 13 children, former civil rights attorney (now disbarred), Kansas Democrat Party stalwart, 1988 Al Gore supporter, old school Baptist and staunch Calvinist, recipient of various awards for his work in the 1980′s on behalf of black clients, runs the WBC out of Wichita, Kansas.

In the 1980′s Phelps and his family had a moment of disgust and enlightenment in Gage Park, a mile or so from their home and the Westboro church, which may have been their seminal, Eureka moment as far as their understanding of the state of America.

Wikipedia capsulized those experiences: In the movie Hatemongers, [produced by the WBC, see tiny.cc/9te8j ], members of the Westboro Baptist Church claim their children were being ‘accosted’ by homosexuals in Gage Park. Phelps even witnessed a homosexual attempting to lure [his 5 year old granddson] Joshua into some shrubbery. after several complaints to the local government about the large amount of homosexual sex occurring in the park, with no resulting action, the Phelps’ put up signs warning of homosexual activity. This resulted in much negative attention towards the family.

It got worse: when the Phelps called on local churches to speak against the activity in Gage Park, the churches also lashed against the Phelps family, leading to the family protesting homosexuality on a regular basis. That defining moment apparently led to what the WBC is today and why it feels homosexuals are the bane of humanity.

Whether the incidents at Gage Park merited Phelps and the WBC unilaterally consigning all gays to Hell, which is God’s prerogative, is another matter.

Another issue which deserves review is the question of the WBC being designated a hate group.

There’s no doubt its signs, chants, and hellish consignments are hateful and sick but the WBC sick hatred is more than counterbalanced by liberals/leftists who never seem to invoke anywhere near equivalent execration.

Statements by leftist Bonnie Erbe that Michelle Malkin deserved to be hate f*cked, Melissa Lafsky rationalizing Mary Jo Kopechne’s death, Rush Limbaugh Should Die Slowly entries on Facebook, KCRW FM’s Sarah Spitz stating that if Limbaugh had a heart attack in her presence she would laugh loudly like a maniac and watch his eyes bug out, virtually everything political emanating from the mouths of MSNBC’s Ed Schultz and alleged comedienne Wanda Sykes, and Rev. Jeremiah Wright, and many others in a similar vein all escape general vilification.

If we are known by the enemies we keep, Westboro’s most avid foe, the Southern Poverty Law Center, SPLC, elevates Westboro to the rank of true American patriots.

The SPLC in its self-designated role of hate-group monitor has branded the WBC as a hate group at the same time the SPLC has been proven to be unadulterated hatemongers.

The SPLC calls the Tea Party movement a vigilante group of terrorists and condemns Americans for Truth about Homosexuality as a hate group because it promotes Biblical morality. Nevertheless, the SPLC maintains a position of authority for the Obama administration so much so that DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano reportedly relied upon the SPLC in preparing the DHS’ slanderous, infamous Right Wing Extremist report for which she subsequently apologized.

It’s no wonder Phelps and the WBC aren’t happy campers.

Translating that unhappiness and discontent with the government and with societal misfits such as the SPLC and its like in no way excuses Phelps and his Westboro Baptist Church from their own extremes but it does make them explicable. They feel God is angry with America and with many of the evils we tolerate, and He probably is

Elizabeth Edwards Loses Her Battle With Breast Cancer

Elizabeth Edwards, the estranged wife of presidential candidate John Edwards, was diagnosed with cancer when her husband was the vice-presidential candidate for the Democrats in 2004. Elizabeth Edwards was on numerous talk shows and wrote several books about her struggles as a woman with cancer and, later, as a woman betrayed by a man who portrayed himself as a faithful family man. she passed away on December 7, 2010.

When you are in the public limelight, there is little hope of privacy. Your words and actions are interpreted and misinterpreted by anyone who has an opinion. I did not know the Edwards’ family except through the media, but I do have an opinion as do many others.

People with cancer, or any catastrophic illness, need to do everything possible to strengthen their immune system. The following are recommendations on the emotional level to assist in this process:

  • Surround yourself with supportive people
  • Eliminate as much stress as possible
  • Release and let go the past

The emotional work of healing is usually done privately. Elizabeth Edwards did not have that opportunity. Some of this was by choice. she said yes to the talk shows and she wrote the books. she was not the one who chose to have an affair and father a child.

I can’t begin to imagine the emotional devastation she felt when it was confirmed that not only had her husband been lying about the affair, he had fathered a child. From the mind-body psychology perspective this also had to have devastated her immune system. At the time she was fighting to remain strong for her children and her husband, he was denying her in the arms of another woman.

From a therapist’s perspective, he wasn’t denying his wife, as much as it looked that way. he was attempting to find comfort. you could say that he was a very weak man who could not cope with his wife’s illness in a healthy and adult manner.

Elizabeth Edwards must have been a woman of great strength. she struggled with anger, fear, despair and rage. she told Oprah she wanted to forgive her husband. I don’t know if she accomplished that before her passing. The reports say that he was there at her bedside, with their children and her siblings, when she passed from this life to the next.

None of us knows how we will handle crisis until we are in the midst of them. Elizabeth Edwards had to face losing her entire life as she knew it. she had to face leaving her children motherless. her husband had to face losing his wife. His fear of losing her, and his inability to be strong for her, ultimately resulted in his losing her much earlier than he needed to.

If William Shakespeare had written a tragedy about this family, it would be studied in universities. The fatal flaw of both would have produced books analyzing this tragedy. instead of fiction, there is a family filled with pain at losing a mother and wife. There is a man who is filled with his own shame and regret that he couldn’t be the man he wanted to be. and then there are the children who have to struggle with losing their mother and the image of the father they thought they knew.

The Baseball Player – Bryce Harper

As a high-school baseball player, Bryce Harper was 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighed 205 lbs, this is huge for a kid his age. however, that doesn’t keep Little League players from looking up to him. He is a great role model, says one Little Leaguer, he makes me feel like I can do impossible things like he does. With all due respect, why does this young fellow look up to him in awe? Right now, Bryce Harper will be the number one draft pick in the 2010 Major league Baseball Draft by the Washington Nationals and be part of the select few who will play professional baseball at the age of 17.

We can’t just look at these achievements; he is already hitting home runs that are setting records. on record, he hit an amazing 502 foot home run during the 2009 International Power Showcase at the Tropicana field. He had the honor of being on the cover of Sports Illustrated because of his 570 foot home run. Harper is becoming quite popular with middle and high-school students, even gaining support from some parents of young baseball players. Not many parents would support a decision to drop out of high school to train for a hard earned baseball career, but Bryce’s parents did. As per with Major League rules, however, he will be finishing his GED before the draft, probably during the summer of 2009.

Bryce Harper began swinging his baseball bat at the age of three. Little leagues from all over the country were scouting Harper to play for them when he was 8; they even offered to pay for hotels and airfare if he would play for their team. the people, who knew Bryce from his childhood, knew he was going to accomplish the impossible. Harper’s natural skill with the sport of baseball is undoubtedly incredible, and could be called a once in a generation genetic lottery.

In addition to being a role model based on skills alone, he also possesses a determination and dedication to the sport of baseball that should be admired even by veteran players. a lot of coaches who have watched Harper play baseball, say his dedication is that of the old time baseball players; he wants to play well and do his best for the team he is playing for. the parents of Bryce Harper never did any pushing of baseball throughout his childhood. Ron Harper, Bryce’s father, is adamant about this.

We have to do what’s best for him. all he wants to do is play baseball. He always has. the best thing we can do as parents is to do what is right for his future.

It could be said that a lot of Bryce Harper’s admirable characteristics come from his supportive family. Every strong baseball player needs a support system, and his family seems to behind all of Bryce’s choices all of the time. Besides just playing baseball, Bryce Harper does it all such as play football, snowboard and do anything else he wants to do. Bryce Harper’s parents state he is still a normal, average Joe, even though he quit playing football. With his amazing proficiency at baseball, inspirational achievements and determined attitude, it’s clear that Bryce Harper has the potential to be a strong role model for other young baseball players.
